Organization Lessons Learned from Tiny Houses

Apartment Experts North Card

Tiny houses have been in the news a lot lately.  Even if you can't imagine living in such a small space, you can still take some lessons from them when decorating your own #apartment, courtesy of Apartment Therapy.

Tiny houses use every square inch of vertical space, which is something you can take away for your own home.  Put a shelf or ledge high up on the wall, or hooks to hang something you can't find space for at a lower height.  As a bonus, it will draw the eye upward and make the space seem larger.

Open shelves are great for any room of the house.  In the bathroom, add a shelf to store toiletries or extra toilet paper, in the kids' room use one to store stuffed animals.  Open shelving will also force you to keep your stuff neater because there's nowhere for mess to hide.

Leave no corner unused.  Tiny houses usually have lofted beds and that area under the stairs is always used.  You can do the same with the space under the stairs in your own home.  The space behind the kickplate in the kitchen can even be used to store seldom used items.

Use furniture that serves more than one purpose or has extra storage space to make sure it's working as hard as it can.  From a sofa that becomes a guest bed to a coffee table that can also be used as a desk or dining table, think about making your stuff do double duty.  Adding hooks to the back of doors is a great way to make sure every bit of storage space is maximized.

Finally, have a place for everything and you will be able to be organized and stay that way with a much smaller investment of time!
