Easy Ways to Go Green

A Plus Apartments Card

Earth Day was this week and in honor of that, here are a few easy ways to conserve and be kinder to Mother Earth, courtesy of Realty Times.

Switch your standard incandescent light bulbs out for a compact fluorescent model (CFL).  CFL's take approximately 75% less electricity and last up to 10 times as long as a regular bulb.  Another great option is LED bulbs, which save even more energy and last even longer, although the initial cost outlay is higher.

If you aren't already doing it, recycle!  You can start by just recycling glass and plastic containers and work your way up to doing everything.  If your #apartment complex offers recycling, take advantage of it, but if not, find a center nearby where you can take your recyclable items.  By just recycling glass, related air pollution can be reduced by a fifth and related water pollution can be cut in half.  Glass that is thrown away can take a million years to decompose.

By shortening your showers, you can save tons of water.  Just a two minute shorter shower saves over 10 gallons of water.  So try being quicker with getting clean to help the environment and save money.

Turn off your computer rather than leaving it in sleep mode, which saves 40 watt hours a day, or $14 a year.  In fact, go ahead and turn off anything with an LED like your tv, cell phone charger, and printer.  Plug them all into power strips that can be turned off at night to save $200 a year.  Turn off video game systems when not in use to save another $100 annually.

Americans get an average of 40 pounds of junk mail annually, which is 100 million trees!  Unsubscribe from all those unwanted offers and circulars and save time and trees.

If everyone paid their bills online and stopped getting paper statements, the US alone could save 20 million trees, eliminate over two billion tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and eliminate 1.7 billion pounds of solid waste annually.

By choosing an energy star model when you buy new appliances, you can save $570 a year.  There are even tax credits when you purchase these models, which have been rated by the government to be good for the environment.
