Bad Decor Habits

Apartment Experts North Card

If you don't like what your apartment looks like, or just think it could be better, examine these bad habits from Apartment Therapy and see if you're guilty of any of them.

If there's no place in your budget for spending on things for your home beyond utilities and emergencies, that's a bad home habit.  Think about how much money you want to invest it getting your apartment to where you want it to be.  Examine whether there is room in your budget to buy decorative or functional things for your house and set aside money if there is.

Do you approach home decor creatively and think about alternatives and different ways to get what you want?  If not, you should.  It's especially important to think creatively when you're pondering purchasing something that is close to what you want, but not quite perfect.  Can you create exactly what you want for less?

Are you trying to be a copycat in your home?  Your home should reflect you, not what someone else's vision of style is.  Think long and hard about how you can inject your own personality and loves into your home and you will receive the ultimate compliment from visitors:  "this space is so you!"

If you aren't parting with furniture and decorative items that aren't making you happy and serving their purpose anymore, that's a pattern you need to break.  If something no longer serves you, Craigslist it or see if a friend would like it, maybe even setting up a trade.  Go ahead and jettison the item from your space, even if you don't have something to replace it, because you'll be able to snag the perfect piece when it comes available.  Another option is to reinvent furniture with paint and tools into something you love.

Don't be afraid to remix your style on a frequent basis and avoid getting stuck in the same old design rut.  Think about why you are afraid to change things and actively push against that fear.  You may find yourself discovering new styles that make you fall in love with your space all over again.
